Thinking about making the career switch to recruitment? We spoke one of our consultants, Georgia Walker, from our HR recruitment team who is a HR recruiter specialist to find out all about why she became a consultant, her biggest learning curves and top tips for succeeding in the recruitment industry. Read on to find out more.
Hello, my name is Georgia and I joined Search over a year and a half ago as a Healthcare consultant. It was my first time in the world of recruitment and I fell in love with it instantly. I have now moved over to the Human Resources function at Search, as I’ve always been interested in HR and so far the move has been good!
Prior to working at Search, I worked for a well-known financial services organisation within their customer services department. It was heavily regulated and scripted which didn’t work well for someone like me who has a big personality.
Unlike my previous role, as a recruiter you can have complete ownership of your desk and there are no barriers or restrictions to how far you can take it, which I love. You can really make it your own, and adapt your style and approach when speaking to candidates and clients.
Since transferring over to being a recruiter in the HR team, I have had a tremendous amount of support from the team within Professional Services and from my manager too, who has a wealth of knowledge and is constantly offering advice and tips.
There is also a new virtual learning and development training program – connect. – which has helped to keep my skills and knowledge up to date especially working within a new division. The program provides the opportunity to refresh your skills with weekly check-ins, courses, and training days.
For me, my biggest learning curve was adapting to going from a very fast-paced recruitment desk within healthcare to then building one from scratch within HR. I knew it was going to be a challenge but I wanted to ensure I built a strong desk and took time in laying the solid foundations.
Resilience and confidence. You will inevitably get knockbacks even if you have been in the industry for years, however, it’s having the confidence to know that what you’re doing is right, speaking to good candidates, and confidently asking questions.
I am now a few months into building my HR desk and I have brought on three leading logistics and distributions organisations that we haven’t worked with previously as a business. I made my first placement with one of these recently and have been able to pass jobs on from them to other divisions too, which feels great.
Switching to recruitment is not for the faint-hearted, but if you’re somebody who is driven, sociable, and money motivated, recruitment is perfect for you. Search is going through great changes and has exceptional leaders that have joined the business. The Search team has a wealth of knowledge and an amazing program that will help you get to where you want to be!
